Summary[edit]

Description
English: Mine Entrance, Port Mulgrave. The blocked up mine entrance can be seen up the slope. A wooden gantry ran at this level to the pier where the tubs were offloaded into bunkers before loading onto the boats.

Mining began at Port Mulgrave in 1857 working by shafts to the Main seam 60 feet below sea level. In 1860 a new jetty provided access to the Dogger seam worked by drifts. Ginkle Mine opened in 1875 and the entrance to Port Mulgrave Mine was extended to connect up to the Grinkle Mine so that ore could be shipped from the harbour for the Jarrow blast furnaces.

The workings in the Port Mulgrave mine ceased about 1881. Grinkle Mine continued to be worked until 1929 pre-empting the closure of the Jarrow blast furnaces a year later.
