| Description |
Midge is a nonspecific term for a wide variety of small flies. This is nonbiting midge called chironomidae or mufflehead (for obvious reasons) They live on decaying matter and are thus called detritivores. There are biting midges such as sand flies. Wikipedia has a nice article on midges. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midge) These antenna are called plumose which term is derived from the scientific term for feather. Some male moths have very intricate plumose antenna which are specifically designed to detect the pheromones of females. I am not sure if the same is true for this midge. |
