The Mexican National Railway,traversing the country from the capital to the UnitedStates frontier, was opened in November, 1888, as wellas a line southwards to Oaxaca, later; and thus thenineteenth century closed with an era of growingstability and prosperity at home and a creditable reputa-tion abroad. It is not the intention of this work to indulgein the flattery which in some cases has been given to him, especially inMexican books.
