Summary[edit]
DescriptionMetropole and Grand Hotels - geograph.org.uk - 1116249.jpg |
English: Metropole and Grand Hotels The Metropole was built in 1890 by Alfred Waterhouse on the site of former cottages, the architecture, particularly the red terracotta bricks, was initially criticised. Now listed and one of the top hotels in Brighton along with its near neighbour, the Grand which was built between 1862 and 1864 and at the time of its opening was the largest hotel in the town and its tallest building. It was almost demolished in the early 1960s for the new Churchill Square development but survived and is the only original building found in the area bounded by Western Road, Kings Road, Cannon Place and the rear of West Street. Viewed from the Esplanade with Kings Road Arches beneath the road built into the former low lying cliffs. |
