Summary[edit]

Description
English: Rhyolitic metatuffs in the Silurian of Maine, USA.

In the Mt. Desert Island area of coastal Maine, felsic and mafic volcanic rocks of Late Silurian age occur near the Cadillac Mountain Granite, a large mid-Paleozoic pluton. The rocks were erupted when the island was a large volcanic center. The granite body is the remains of the solidified magma chamber beneath that ancient volcano. The volcanic succession, called the Cranberry Island Series, mostly consists of rhyolitic volcanic breccias, volcanic tuffs, and rhyolite lava flows. Mafic tuffs and basalt lava flows occur at the top.

Seen here are metamorphosed rhyolitic volcanic tuffs in the middle member of the series, which is the most voluminous of the three members.
