English: Original caption: “This picture illustrates the operation of lumbar puncture and the technique in injecting the antimeningitis serum. The patient is lying on his left side over the right side of the bed. His back is bowed by the physician in the middle of the photograph by flexing the hips on his abdomen and bending his head forward. The skin at the site of the operation has been painted with tincture of iodine. The site of the operation is draped off with sterile towels. The needle has been inserted at the level of the crest of the ileum, which is marked with tincture of iodine. The assistant at the head of the patient is taking blood pressure observations.
