Description |
English: Photographs of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project constructed between 1918-1961.
In 1919 the city of Seattle needed to devise a transportation method to get crews and supplies from Rockport, where the current railroad ended, 23 miles east to Newhalem, which would be the site of the first plant of the Skagit project, the Gorge Dam and Powerhouse. A railroad was thus constructed by Grant Smith & Company. When work began on the next phase of the project, Diablo, in 1927, the rail line was extended four more miles east. For the final phase, Ross Dam and Powerhouse, supplies were sent from the end of the rail line in Diablo by barge to the Ross site. Caption on image: 8-12-20, 5099. PH Coll 1124.84
