THE PRIVATE LIFE OFTHE RENAISSANCE FLORENTINES pIORENZA of the thirteenth century differed very■*- little from the Fiorenza of the fourteenth andof the fifteenth. To whoever gazed down upon herfrom a height she would have appeared a gloomy massof battlemented towers, encompassed by walls andbulwarks. The public buildings that we admire to-day, thegraceful cupolas of the churches, the bell-towers whosevoices repeat the heart-beats of the people, did not yetstand out against a background of deep-blue sky likethe huge masts of a mighty vessel. The third cinctureof walls that enclosed the city, whose demolition ourown day has witnessed, was not yet completed, andArno made a bend near the Piazza di Santa Croce,issuing between the Ponte a Rubaconte and the Castleof Altafronte. This was in the early times of thefourteenth century, when the little Church of SantaReparata was still extant, and the very name ofSanta Maria del Fiore was unknown.
