Summary[edit]
DescriptionMemorial on the site of the Battle of Flodden - geograph.org.uk - 1092815.jpg |
English: Memorial on the site of the Battle of Flodden Friday the 9th September 1513 was without doubt Scotland's 'Black Friday'!
Here, at Flodden, the Scots army led by King James IV was annihilated by an English army under Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey. King James, virtually the entire nobility and countless thousands were killed. Indeed the kings body taken south has not yet been returned. This event gave rise to the famous song and pipe tune, "The Flowers of the Forest", frequently performed today at military funerals and commemorations. A reference to the withering of the nations best and bravest in battle. |
