My mother described to me the enthusiastic admirationwith which the Queen was received on one occasion whenshe appeared at the opera soon after her marriage. Theperformance was Ijphigenie en Aulicle. The Queen arrivedvery late, and the fine chorus, Chantons, celebrons notreHeine, had just been sung. As soon as the Queen entered,the repetition of the chorus was unanimously called for,and it was sung by the whole audience with such affec-tionate ardour that the Queen melted into tears. Alas!
