Title
Medieval vessel handle terminal collar, zoomorphic.
Description
English: Medieval cast copper alloy vessel drop handle fragment with zoomorphic terminal collar, 14th-16th century. The stylised zoomorphic (dog's?) head is rivetted, through the mouth, onto the end of the drop handle. The shaft of the handle is sub-circular in section. The rest of the handle is broken off at the point where it turned at &90deg;. The zoomorphic terminal would have originally secured an attachment loop; now missing. Length (overall) 27.17mm, length of head 15.32mm, width across head 9.91mm, thickness (height) of head 12.72mm, width across [shaft] 4.7mm, thickness of shaft 5.6mm, weight 11.01g.

See DENO-F05AE6 (Twyford & Stenson, Derbys), & DENO-204990 (Wickenby, Lincs) for similar handle terminals.

Egan 1998 ('The Medieval Household; Daily Living c.1150-1450', Stationary Office) p175, no.487 for a more complete handle. he notes that a similar handle survives on a shallow sheet bowl from a hoard of 14th-16th century metalwork from Wales. This type of handle may also come from chest / caskets etc.
