Title |
Medieval to Post-medieval silver bell |
||
Description |
English: A Medieval to post-Medieval silver bell of roughly spherical form. The bell comprises two sheet metal hemispheres, with a ropework wire strand covering the central join. A dumbbell-shaped aperture is located on the underside of the bell chamber. A circular-sectioned wire, bent into a loop, has been attached to the centre point of the upper hemisphere, probably by means of a solder. The pea is retained within the hollow interior of the bell. A close parallel for this bell, albeit in copper-alloy, is no. 1645 from excavations in London, which was found in a late 13th to mid 14th century context (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 338-339). Such bells continued to be manufactured after the Medieval period, with another published parallel, dated to the early 16th century, having been found in Southwark (Egan 2005: 57, no. 246). |
