Title |
Medieval papal bulla |
||
Description |
English: Fragment of a papal bulla, cast in lead. The fragment represents about one quarter of the original, which would have been about 36mm across when whole, but now measures 35.2mm long, 13.7mm wide and 4.4mm thick. It weighs 14.4g and appears to have been deliberately cut. On the obverse, the face of St Peter is visible and the last letter of the legend, i.e. [S'PA S'P]E. The reverse legend reads A[---]/AN[---]/P[P---]. This incomplete inscription could belong to Alexander III (1159-1181), Alexander IV (1254-1261), Alexander V (1409-10), Alexander VI (1492-1503), Adrian IV (1154-59), Adrian V (1276) or Adrian VI (1522-23) and cannot therefore be precisely dated. |
