Title
Medieval copper-alloy seal matrix
Description
English: A complete cast Medieval copper-alloy seal matrix dating AD 1300-1400. The face of the seal matrix is circular and flat with an impression comprising two human figures standing facing each other in the centre. Both appear to be wearing robes or tunics and there is a cross between their heads. The figures are surrounded by a beaded border and a circumferential legend that reads LOVE ME ANDE I YE.

The reverse of the face domes gradually up to the base of the oval-sectioned integral handle. This expands to form a crude transverse collar to the top of which is attached a circular loop made from a rectangular-sectioned band.

All the surfaces of the seal matrix have a dark brown patina with several patches of lighter brown on the front and back of the face and the handle.

The seal matrix measures 18.63mm in hight. The face is 20.01mm in diameter and a maximum of 4.8mm thick. The handle measures a maximum of 8mm wide and 7.9mm thick, while the loop aperture has an internal diameter of 2.8mm. The seal matrix weighs 10.8 grams.

There are a number of seal matrices recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database with this depiction and inscription, including CAM-83011F, IOW-CFE1A5 and NMS-0D1555, all of which are dated to the fourteenth century rather than those of the thirteenth century that carry personal names.
