Title
Medieval casket key
Description
English: A cast copper alloy casket key dating to the Medieval period, (1100-1500). The object consists of an incomplete circular bow, stem and bit. The stem is hollow and is oval in cross-section. The bit has two worn clefts one on either side resulting in one long simple ward. The ward measures 8.55mm in width and 4.46mm in length. File marks are visible on one face on the base of the bow where the patina remains. The object has a dark brownish green patina.

Similar examples can be found on p72, Read, (2001). The object can be dated from the late 12th to the early 14th century.
