Intowhat it may grow is hidden in the times to come.^ 1 About two months after the signing of the treaty with Germany there was signedat St. Germain (September lo, 1919) a treaty, similar to it in essentials, between theallied and associated powers and Austria, which was now merely a pitiful fragment, witha population of about 7,000,000, of the old Austria-Hungary. By the terms of this treatyAustria was required to cede to Italy the Trentino and Trieste, and acknowledge theindependence and sovereignty of the new states — Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Jugo-slavia— which had been formed in whole or in part out of provinces of the disruptedAustro-Hungarian monarchy.
