English: Queen's South Africa Medal, 1899-1902, Anglo Boer War (four bars) Medal awarded to 2287 Farrier James McJarrow Rutherford, 5th Contingent New Zealand Mounted Rifles. silver medal; four bars; plain straight swivelling suspender; with ribbon obverse- crowned and veiled head of Queen Victoria and legend VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX reverse- Britannia with a flag in her left hand and holding out a laurel wreath in her right towards an advancing party of soldiers; in the background are two warships; below the wreath, in two lines- 1899-1900 in relief; around top- SOUTH AFRICA bars- CAPE COLONY - TRANSVAAL - RHODESIA - SOUTH AFRICA 1901 ribbon- red with two dark blue stripes and a broad orange central stripe named on edge- 2287 FARR. | Notes | Queen's South Africa Medal, 1899-1902 Medal awarded to 2287 Farrier James McJarrow Rutherford, 5th Contingent New Zealand Mounted Rifles. James Rutherford served in South Africa for one year and 118 days. He had hoped to reenlist with the 7th Contingent, but took ill with a severe case of dysentry while enroute from the Transvaal and was invalided back to New Zealand. He received the following bars- Cape Colony (11th October 1899-31st May 1902) Transvaal (24th May 1900-31st May 1902) Rhodesia (11th October 1899-17th May 1900) South Africa 1901 (1st January and 31st December 1901) During World War One James Rutherford served in Mesopotamia with the Australian and New Zealand Wireless Signal Squadron. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
