Notes Victory Medal, 1914-19, WW1 Medal awarded to 44880 Rifleman William Timms, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, NZEF. William Timms, died in New Zealand on 29.6.1919 of disease. Australian-born William Timms enlisted from the Auckland provincial district. He had been in New Zealand for 12 years and was employed as a bushman. He embarked from Wellington on 5 April 1917 with the 25th Reinforcements and marched into Sling Camp on 11 June 1917, proceeding ‘overseas’ on 5 September 1917 to join the 3rd Auckland Battalion. After a brief period with the 1st Australian Tunnelling Company he was transferred to the 1st Battalion 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade. William Timms received a gunshot wound to his left elbow at Bapaume on 10th August 1918. He died at Auckland Hospital, New Zealand on 26 June 1919, suffering a cerebral abscess and chronic (stitis mephia). William's next-of-kin was recorded as- Mrs Fielder, Grey St. Auckland, however, his medals were returned unclaimed and were sent on to the Town Clerk, Auckland City Council. They were part of a larger collection of unclaimed medals that were subsequently presented to the Auckland Museum.
