English: The Africa Star, WW2 Awarded to 3529549 Private William Henry Deakin, Durham Light Infantry, WW2 bronze six pointed star 43mm diameter, ring suspender, with ribbon Obverse- In the centre the Royal cypher ‘GRI’ with ‘VI’ below. The cypher is surmounted by a crown on a circlet which bears the title of the star ‘THE AFRICA STAR’ reverse- plain Ribbon- 32mm wide grosgrain ribbon, pale buff with a central red stripe and two narrow stripes, one of dark blue and the other of light blue

Notes Corporal William Henry Deakin MM, born in Leigh, UK, served with the Durham Light Infantry (service no 3529549) during WW2, taking part in Dunkirk, the Liberation of Geel (Belgium), and was a POW on crematorium duties at Auschwitz and Helle. After the war he settled in New Zealand and volunteered for service in Korea with K-Force. He died in 1999.
