There is a groupof artificial lakes which lie buried in themountain fastnesses of Alpine County,fed in part by streams and in part by thewinter snows, which play an importantrole in the Pacific Service scheme ofthings, for they bear their wealth of white coal through valley and canyoninto the Mokelumne River, from which,in turn, they are taken by ditch and tun-nel to provide power for the mining re-gions of the mother lode in Amador andCalaveras counties, and to supply waterfor domestic purposes to the various com-munities of that region, notably Jacksonand Sutter Creek.
