Description
Français : Les mattes témoignent de l'activité de charbonnage durant des siècles

Les charbonniers, par cycles de 20 ans environ, coupent la souche du chêne-vert à sa base pour que 5 ou 6 rejets de souche apparaissent, et donnent plusieurs '"brins" (petits troncs) Ces petits troncs sont cycliquement coupés pour fournir le bois des charbonnières. Au bout d'une dizaine de cycles de coupes de 20 ans, l'arbre s'épuise. La souche centrale meurt;

Mais des rejets apparaissent à distance formant plus ou moins un cercle. C'est la matte.
