In the Brazilian Amazon, deforestation has been proceeding at a rate of about 20,000 sq km per year. The Mato Grosso state in southwest Brazil is typical of this trend. The left image is a 1992 Landsat Thematic Mapper image.

Description

English: In the Brazilian Amazon, deforestation has been proceeding at a rate of about 20,000 sq km per year. The Mato Grosso state in southwest Brazil is typical of this trend. The left image is a 1992 Landsat Thematic Mapper image. About 25% of the area has been clear-cut for pastures and farms. In 2006, the ASTER image shows over 80% of the rain forest was gone, cleared for pastureland by commercial and speculative interests, and poorly planned government policies. The ASTER image was acquired July 28, 2006, covers an area of 15 x 45 km, and is located near 9.7 degrees south latitude and 55.2 west longitude.
