l grant inNew Mexico is leased for 38 years by the Maxwell Cattle Company, with a capital of $1,000,000. The ranch contains 1,400,000 acres, and has a capacity of sustaining 80,000 cattle. THE COWBOY. The cowboy plays such an important part in the cattle businessthat we stop here to tell the reader about him. You have heardmuch about him, but little that is true. So incorrect are the repre-sentations of him in theEastern States that thereader will be surprisedto learn from the photo-graph that the cowboy isa member of the humanfamily. We assure the readerthat this is a photographof a real cowboy, whom wehave seen and conversedwith, and from whom wt-begged the photo. He has lived mostof his life just outside ofcivilization, and scouredthe ** Great Plains, andpenetrated the Rockies,so thoroughly, that he ismore at home there thanhe is in Denver or Greeley.

In this way hehas learned what it is to have a broken arm, a dislocated shoulder, fractured ribs, sprained ankles, and bruises without number; but hewas easily mended, and is now as good as new. He has been pickedup for dead several times, when horse and rider went down togetherin their chase after a wild steer; and no one could tell why he wasnot killed, except that his time had not come. And yet this daringcov/boy, so familiar with Mife on the plains, his life as wild as thecattle which he herded, actually went into a civilized community, courted and married a modest, good girl, and established a home. If her ideas of acowboy, and thoseof her neighbors, had been like thoseof many Easternpeople, she wouldhave run awayfrom
