Iwould like a cucumber.We had a squash to-daythat some one of theboys bought me, and itwas nice. We have noteven potatoes now, andI scarcely know howfruit looks. We had fourteenletters in the last mail,and you may be surethat we enjoyed them.Last night Ed. wastaken sick, fortunatelyafter I had retired, andhe had a terrible fit. Icould hear him talkas crazy as could be,and it was an hour be-fore he was conscious.He came near havinganother this morning,but we worked overhim and prevented it. C takes care of him, and I have not been alone with him all. I hope G will not have to go away again, but I sometimes think if he does I go too, wherever it may be. . . . Two of the men usually sleep in the house, — one on the bed G made, and the other on the floor; the others sleep in the tent, which they prefer.

His father was theproprietor of a leading, daily journal in a large city of the East, — aman of wealth and position. His mother, before her marriage, was aprofessor in a leading college for females, — an accomplished woman.Their son had received an excellent education, and was familiar withthe refinement and style of wealthy families in a large city ; but nowhe was a cowboy, subject to terrible fits, which he claimed werebrought on by smoking cigarettes. His employer and wife hadno doubt that the drink-curse was the real cause of his absence fromhome. As there were no liquors on the ranch, and no place to obtainthem for miles, their views on the subject were not verified beyondcontradiction. But on the evening of his §ickness, as rehearsedabove, he went to Mrs. and said : — I am going to smoke a cigarette, and I shall have a fit after it.You had better retire. Scarcely thinking that
