e manner. It is preceded by a slightescape of steam in a steady stream of great force, much as water isprojected from the nozzle of hose used with steam fire-engines. Thecolumn is somewhat fan-shaped, and keeps a high average height.The ground is shaken during the action. The geyser acts certainlyonce in twenty-four hours, and occasionally oftener. On the i8thof September, 1882, the writer observed two fine eruptions with aninterval of only fourteen hours. The height of the column variesfrom a hundred and seventy to two hundred and nineteen feet; andwhen the spray is between the beholder and the sun, a magnificentrainbow is visible. The Giantess Geyser has no cone. It is situated four hundred feetfrom the Bee Hive, higher up, and spouts from the top of theground. Its aperture is twenty-four by thirty-four feet. The depthof its basin is sixty-three feet. The eruption occurs once in fourteendays, and it sends up a mighty column two hundred and fifty feet into 78 MARVELS OF THE NEW WEST.

Theeruption is accompaniedwith deep rumbling andtrembhng of the earth,which is startling indeed,especially in the night,when its greatest activityappears. Mr. Langfordreported : ** No water couldbe discovered, but we coulddistinctly hear it gurglingand boiling at a great dis-tance below. Suddenly itbegan to rise, boiling andspluttering, and sendingout huge masses of steam,causing a general stam-pede of our company,driving us some distancefrom our point of observa-tion. When within aboutforty feet of the surface itbecame stationary, and wereturned to look downupon it. It was foamingand surging at a terriblerate, occasionally emittingsmall jets of hot waternearly to the mouth of theorifice. All at once itseemed seized with a fear- I ful spasm, and rose with incredible rapidity, hardlyaffording us time to flee toa safe distance, when itburst from the orifice withterrific momentum, rising m afee
