,when not a white man resided there, but as many Indians as thereare now white inhabitants. He began his service with Colonel Myerson a salary of ^30 dollars per month, which was steadily advanceduntil the third year, when he took entire control of his employers trailbusiness at a salary of $1,800 per year and expenses. He continuedwith Colonel Myers for seven years, during which time he drove herdsto Abilene, Wichita, Great Bend, Ellsworth, and Dodge City, Kansas ;and also to Cheyenne, Wyoming, Salt Lake, Utah, the Humbolt Riverin Nevada, and across to California, also to the various Indian agen-cies on the upper Missouri River and Black Hills country. Hisbusiness relations with Colonel Myers were terminated in 1873 by thedeath of the latter gentleman. In 1875 he assumed the generalmanagement of the extensive cattle business of Ellison, Deweese, &Bishop, of San Antonio, Texas, handling from 30,000 to 50,000 cattleannually, iln the spring of 1878 the last-named firm dissolved, and

Thefirm of Bishop & Head existed until 1883, when the prevailing highprices induced Mr. Head to insist upon a sale of the partnership prop-erty, which was accomplished over the friendly protest of Mr. Bishop.In May, 1883, he accepted the management of the business of thePrairie Cattle Company, the largest company of the kind in the world. He filled this position for three years, during which time he mar-keted from the ranches of the company over 54,000 cattle, nettingover $1,300,000, and branded for the company, from its herds, morethan 83,000 calves, and after paying all expenses, interest on deben-ture bonds, and also paying dividends to its stockholders amounting inthree years to forty two per cent of the capital invested, left the com-pany with some 5,000 more cattle than when he assumed the manage-ment of its
