A waggish traveller, dilating upon the great pleasure to be de-rived from a ride over this mesa in a Pullman car, says that it is thebest illustration he has found of being carried to the skies onflowery beds of ease. In this part of Colorado the Garden of the Gods is repeatedin numerous monumental rocks which appear among the pines, risingin fantastic columns, some of them nearly as high as the trees. Theartist has produced an excellent representation of one of the tallest. One of the most remarkable curves of this railway occurs in oneof the wildest localities known. LOTS WIFE. unbroken until the daring enterprise of civilization penetrated thestrange solitude. It is known as Phantom Curve. With themonument-shaped rocks on one side, and the castellated cliffs, fiveor six hundred feet high, on the other, the scene is strangely wildand mysterious. MARVELS OF ENTERPRISE. 305 At one point on Phantom Curve the first view of Toltec Tun-nel is obtained — so far away that it appears only as a small blackspot on the face of the cliffs. The reader can but partially imagine the grandeur of the sceneryviewed from the train at the opening of the tunnel, which is cut sixhundred feet through solid rock. A writer says of it: Here thebeauty and the grandeur of the scenery are beyond description. Allthe features of the landscape are on a Titanic scale. The track overwhich the train has just passed can be seen circling the brow ofthe mountain for miles, — a tiny, yellowish thread.
