Text Appearing Before Image:
n and the riveris still. The preceding cut represents a remarkable hanging rock, of which there are severalin the Rocky Moun-tain region. This is; the most famous of- them all, and it is loca-^i ted in the wildest part,:^ of Echo Canon. Thecanon is so crooked fornearly thirty miles be-fore reaching this rock, that the railway cros-ses the creek thirty-onetimes in twenty-sixmiles. Eight miles fromEcho City the rocksjust described are lostsight of, and others ofdifferent form, largerand grander, are sub-stituted. The canonalso becomes wilder andmore inaccessible, re-quiring tunnels to becut in order to sur-mount serious difficul-ties. Here a tunnel, five hundred and fiftyfeet through a solidrock, is cut, and a littlefurther on, another ofless importance. Nearthe entrance of the firsttunnel formerly stoodFinger Rock. Timeand the elements have broken it away, but its remarkable appear-ance is still remembered distinctly by those who were so fortunate^s to behold it in its original symmetry.
Text Appearing After Image:
On the Line of U. P. Railway. DEVILS SLIDE. MARVELS OF NATURE. 31 Devils Slide is a very singular figure, and is an object of great in-terest to tourists. It is serrated rocks. This slide is composed oftwo ridges of granite rock, reaching from the river nearly to the summitof a sloping, grass-clad mountain. They are from fifty to two hun-dred feet high, narrow slabs, standing on edge, as though forcedout of the mountain side. The two ridges run parallel with eachother, about ten feet apart, the space between them covered withgrass, wild flowers, and climbing vines. If nature had intended to provide a curiosity for travellers of thenineteenth century, when human enterprise would tunnel and removemountains, she could not have been more successful. The action ofthe elements has produced many remarkable natural phenom.ena, here and elsewhere, but few more interesting than this. We do notwonder that wind and water have been ages in excavating thismighty gorge, with so much carving on its ad
