III. MARVELS OF ENTERPRISE. THE remarkable growth of the New West is one of its marvels.Less than fifty years ago, the larger part of it was known as the Great American Desert. Reference to the accompanying mapsof the New West as it was and as it is, will satisfy the reader that itssurprising growth is truly a marvel. It is only forty-five years since Fremont undertook his first explor-ing expedition, which embraced only a small portion of the NewWest, — that portion lying between the Missouri River and theRocky Mountains, along the line of the Kansas and Great Platterivers. It was regarded as a hazardous enterprise ; and the hardshipsand perils of such an expedition were really appalling. The emigrantor hunter who succeeded in reaching the Rocky Mountains, withoutlosing his scalp, was considered a fortunate man ; for the savages ofthat day were blood-thirsty and cruel.
