Title
Martyrdom of St. Sebastian
Date ca. 1625
Medium oil on wood
Dimensions 47 x 33 cm (frame)
Notes A Flemish or German painting based on an original by Palma il Giovane. Now apparently lost, the original became well known through copper engravings by Aegidius Sadeler and Thomas de Leu, one laterally reversed and the other not. This led to many variations in oil by non-Italian artists, including a painting in the Corsini Collection in Rome (inventory no. 248). Another is in the Milwaukee Art Museum (inventory no. M1991.40).

Public domain

The author died in 1628, so this work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 100 years or fewer.

This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1929.

This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details.
