Martha, the last Passenger Pigeon on display at the Smithsonian Institute still showing green iridescence on her neck, July 2022

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Martha was the last known living passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) and died at the Cincinatti Zoo on September 1, 1914. Her remains were sent to Washington D.C. for preservation at the Smithsonian Institute for Natural History. Martha has been on public display in the Smithsonian's "Objects of Wonder" exhibit alongside a Mountain Gorilla skull since March 10th, 2017. She will remain on display there until the exhibit's scheduled closure in 2025. In this photograph natural green iridescence can still be seen on the bird's neck.
