Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Valley of Kashmir was known as the 'Holy city' of Hindus in old times and almost every place show some relic antiquity of this fact.Martand(Modern Mattan)-Sun Temple is one such illustration. It is a precious specimen of ancient art-curious stone miniatures, phallic emblems and carved images. They are known to be the works of 'Pandavas' that is why locally it is called 'Pandav Land' I.e the land or house of Pandavas.Pandavas were giant size humans who could lift mighty and bulky things easily. As the name Martand(Sun) suggests that the temple was dedicated to the Sun.The temple is located five miles from Anantnag. Martand-Sun Temple was founded within the limits of one century or between A.D 370-500.There was always a debate among historians on the foundation of this temple. The colonnade is recorded in the Rajtarngini as the work of Laltaditya and the same authority says it was built by Ranaditya. The temple was destroyed by the bigoted Sikander also known as But-Shikan,Butcher of Kashmir,Iconoclast. He was reigning at the period of Timure's invasion of India.
