Description |
"The Hon. Mark George Kerr Rolle...This portrait was presented to the Borough of Great Torrington by inhabitants of the town and neighbourhood in grateful remembrance of his life and character". (Inscription on gilt plaque on frame). Portrait by Sir John Collier (d.1934), displayed in Great Torrington Townhall. The principal seat of the Rolle family had long been Stevenstone, in the parish of St Giles in the Wood, adjacent to the parish of Great Torrington. The Rolles were lords of the manor of Great Torrington and owned much land within it and around it, and were the largest landowners in Devon by the end of the 19th century. Many held the honorary position of Recorder of Great Torrington. Today a copy hangs in the boardroom of Lord Clinton's Clinton Devon Estates at East Budleigh, Baron Clinton having been the ultimate heir of the Rolle family. The painting appears to display a certain modesty of character in Mark Rolle, the largest landowner in Devon, who poses in an unassuming manner hatless, with a simple working collie sheepdog, holding in his left hand a shepherd's crook and a flat cap, attributes associated with the rural working class. Perhaps an oblique play on the famous portrait of Marie-Antoinette posing as a simple shepherdess. This contrasts with a large and grand portrait, in Barnstape Guildhall, (see File:MarkRolleByHenryRichardGraves.png) of him as a young man posing with his pack of highly-bred foxhounds (the Stevenstone Foxhounds hunt) in the archetypal aristocratic manner. |
