Summary[edit]
MARINER 10 SPACE PROBE IS PREPARED FOR ENCAPSULATION
DescriptionMariner 10 prepared for encapsulation.jpg | After complete check out, technicians prepare to encapsulate Mariner 10, the spacecraft that will be launched toward the planets Venus and Mercury in early November. The Mariner 10 project includes two first: First use of one planet's (Venus') gravitational field to propel a spacecraft onto another; and first exploration of Mercury. The spacecraft weighs 1,100 pounds, including 170 pounds of scientific equipment. Two television cameras aboard Mariner 10 are expected to take 8,000 pictures of the two planets, and six scientific experiments will return information on solar wind, magnetic fields, charged particles, temperature emissions, radio signals, and atmospheric conditions. Mariner will be launched atop Atlas/Centaur 34, from NASA Complex 36B at Cape Kennedy, Fla. |
