English: "Commentaire : En 1775, c'est à Gautier-Dagoty que revient la délicate mission de réaliser le premier portrait en grand habit de cour de Marie-Antoinette, devenue reine de France en 1774 avec l'accession au trône de son époux Louis XVI. Exposé dans la galerie des glaces après sa livraison, il appartient aujourd'hui à nouveau aux collections du château de Versailles (fig. 1, 162 × 130 cm, inv. MV8061).
Jean-Baptiste André Gautier Dagoty, parfois appelé le chevalier Dagoty, appartenait à une famille d'artistes et pratiqua diférentes techniques lui-même, de la gravure à la peinture, en passant par l'impression de textile de luxe pour l'ameublement. Si Elisabeth Vigée Lebrun emporta les préférences de Marie-Antoinette pour ses portraits officiels, Dagoty obtint également ses faveurs et porta, à partir de 1775, le titre de « peintre de la reine et de Madame ». Sur ce portrait en buste, la jeune reine est représentée avec plus de simplicité que sur la toile de Versailles, vêtue d'une robe noire et d'une coiffe ornées de rubans bleu faisant ressortir ses yeux. Ses cheveux sont dressés à la verticale selon la célèbre mode des coiffures dites « pouf » imaginée par le coiffeur Léonard et adoptée par Marie-Antoinette dès 1775. Un portrait sur lequel la reine porte une tenue similaire est conservé dans les collections du musée de Lunéville." [1] |
