Il dipinto rappresenta il ritratto di Maria Antonia Ferdinanda di Borbone Spagna (1729-1785), sposa dal 1750 di Vittorio Amedeo III. Un dipinto del tutto simile a questo, dove però la regina appare leggermente più giovane, fu inviato da Torino a Roma, al Quirinale, il 18 febbraio 1946 e collocato nella sala degli Ambasciatori. Tale dipinto, del quale esiste una fotografia conservata presso la Biblioteca Reale di Torino (Iconografia Sabauda III, 86), reca sul retro della cornice l'etichetta "Torino 314 (1911)". Entrambi i ritratti sono stati riferiti a Giovanni Panealbo, ritrattista di corte a Torino nel 1782 (vedi: Laureati L./ Trezzani L. (a cura di), Il patrimonio artistico del Quirinale. Pittura antica. La quadreria, Roma 1993, p. 186, scheda n. 197). Dagli inventari consultati risulta che nel 1881 il quadro si trovava nella camera da parata (locale n. 31) dell'Appartamento dei Duchi di Savoia, al secondo piano del Palazzo mentre nel 1911 è inventariato al primo piano, nel salone dell'Appartamento detto dei "Quadri moderni", per essere quindi spostato nella sua attuale collocazione, la sala della colazione, dove è attestato dal 1966.
