Il dipinto raffigura, come indica anche la scritta sul retro, Maria Antonia Ferdinanda, moglie di Vittorio Amedeo III, qui rappresentata in vesti regali, tanto da suggerire una datazione posteriore all'ascesa al trono del marito, nel 1773. Un dipinto simile è presente sempre in Palazzo Reale a Torino, nella stanza 64 del secondo piano, Camera di udienza dell'Appartamento del Duca d'Aosta (cfr. negativo SBAS TO 187377). L'opera in questione, curiosamente sprovvista del numero di inventario del 1966, nell'inventario del 1881 si trova nella camera n. 11 del piano terreno, mentre nel 1911 è registrata al primo piano, nel Gabinetto di toeletta dell'Appartamento detto dei "Quadri Moderni".
