Description
English: Map of the Gallipoli peninsula and Dardanelles, Turkey, scale 1:40,000 from War Office map (683), used during the First World War Gallipoli Campaign in 1915. Relief shown by contours and spot heights. Depth shown by bathymetric soundings. Includes instructions for the use of squares and abbreviations in English and French. Mitchell Collection copy donated by Lieutenant D.G. Marks who was with the 13th Battalion AIF at Gallipoli in 1915. This map was derived from the 1908 1:63,360 map and issued to the officers of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. Sheets of the map were used during the Gallipoli landing, for example: Captain Raymond Leane's map, 11th Battalion.
