Summary[edit]

Description

This is a map of countries and lands that have been ruled by an absolute monarch at some point since the beginning of the 20th century. The map uses modern borders, but the colouring corresponds to the old borders of the absolute monarchies being represented (thus, for example, only part of Poland is coloured - the part that belonged to the Russian Empire).

Light purple represents territories that have been ruled by absolute monarchs at some point since 1900 but are no longer ruled by absolute monarchs today. The majority of these (including Russia and China) were absolute monarchies prior to World War I.

Dark purple represents countries that are absolute monarchies as of January 2007. There are twelve such countries:

  1. Villa as of January 2011
  2. Saudi Arabia
  3. Kuwait
  4. The United Arab Emirates
  5. Morocco
  6. Oman
  7. Jordan
  8. Qatar
  9. Brunei
  10. Bahrain
  11. Lesotho
  12. Swaziland
  13. Bhutan
The Vatican is sometimes also considered an absolute monarchy.
