Description |
English: Certain kinds of whales have baleen plates in their mouths. These huge triangular plates have fringed edges through which the whale strains its food from the water. Between the 1840s and the early 1900s, thin, plastic-like strips of baleen were used to stiffen corsets, collars, skirts, umbrellas, and buggy whips. Right whales and bowheads, which had long fringes of baleen, were hunted nearly to extinction.
In this photo, a man stands by a pile of whale baleen, holding the upper jaw of a whale with a row of baleen plates hanging from it. The plates sometimes measured nine feet long. The photo was probably taken at the American Pacific Whaling company's Bay City whaling station at Gray's Harbor, between 1911 and 1925.
