Also known as Bijjalesvarapura in its history, Machalaghatta used to be a major town in Hoysala era. Now a small village about 6 kilometers south of Honakere, it has a soapstone temple for Shiva. Though simple, it is notable as another example of pre-Islamic era Hindu temple whose mandapa ceilings are well designed domes (total nine, each unique in details). The shikhara is phamsana type (nine stepped pyramidal). Inside are four beautifully shaped pillars with ornaments. Of the artwork that has survived, the most notable are those for Saptamatrikas, Ganesha, Umamaheswara and Lakshmi. This temple must have been a major complex as there are ruins, a stambha foundation, etc spread over a few acres around this temple.

This is a JPEG format plan and architectural drawing of a historic Indian temple or monument. The relative scale and relative dimensions in this architectural drawing are close to the actual but neither exact nor complete. The plan illustrates the design and layout, but some intricate details or parts of the temple may not be shown. In cases where exact measurements were not feasible, the drawing uses best approximations and rounds the best measurements feasible.
