filling with water,a most destructive fire. The Cumberland fought well ; but the combatwas unequal. Buchanan gradually drew off the Merrimac ; and againopening his ports, he rushed against his disabled antagonist, this timecompletely crushing in her side. It was now all over with the Cumberland. Giving a parting fire tothe monster which was retiring from the ruin it had wrought, withapparent indifference, Morris ordered his men to jump overboard and savethemselves. This was quickh* done ; and in a few minutes afterwards, the vessel went down in fifty-four feet of water, carrying with her aboui piiiiffliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiKi
Text Appearing After Image:
186 BUCHANAN AND WORDEN. 187 one hundred of dead, sick and wounded, who could not be moved. Thetopmast of the Cumberland remained partially above the water, with herflag flying from its peak. It was now nearly four oclock in the afternoon. Having fini.shedthe Cumberland, the Merrimac now turned her attention to the sailingfrigate Congress. We have seen that just as the Merrimac appeared bythe way of the Elizabeth River two other vessels came down the James,as if by a preconcerted arrangement. These vessels were the Yoiktownand the Jamestown, or, as the latter was now called, the Patrick Henry. While the Merrimac was engaged with the Cumberland, the Yorktownand the Jamestown, which had successfully passed the National batteriesat Newport News, had tackled the Congress. Until the Cumberlandwent down the Congress made a gallant and successful resistance. Withthe help of the Zouave, she then managed to run aground undercover ofthe strong batteries just named. ON FIRE IN A NUMBER OF PLACES.
