as given to Lieutenant E. De Haven, a young naval officer,who accompanied the United States exploring expedition. Dr. E. K.Kane, surgeon and naturalist, was one of the officers. The expeditionwas absent a little more than sixteen months. Off the coast of Labradorthey met an iceberg making its way toward the tropics. The night wasvery dark, and as the huge voyager had no light out, the Advancecould not be censured f:)r running foul. She was puuished, however, bythe loss of her jib-boom, as she ran against the iceberg. When the expedition reached Melville Bay, which, on account of itsfearful character, is also called the Devils Nip, the voyagers began towitness more of the grandeur and perils of Arctic scenes.
