Description

These three Marine aviators were responsible for shooting down 46 Japanese fighters over Guadalcanal. From left to right: Major John L. Smith, Major Robert D. Galer, and Captain Marion E. Carl pose for a photo after being awarded Navy Crosses for their actions. Major Smith would later be awarded the Medal of Honor.
