e several corps,and their commanders hastened to bidfarewell to General Hooker. By threeoclock, a large number of officers hadassembled, and, soon after, the gen-eral appeared in the avenue before histent. Some time was spent in socialintercourse, and, to the last, all formali-ties were dispensed with. The partingwas painful to every one, particularly tothose who had become endeared to thegeneral by old associations. GeneralHooker was deeply grieved. He hadbeen identified with the army of thePotomac, he said, since its organization,and had hoped to continue with it tothe end. It was the best army of thecountry, worthy of the confidence ofthe nation, and could not fail of successin the approaching struggle. He spokeof his successor as a glorious soldier,and uiged all to give him their earnestsupport. Major-General Geoi-ge G. Meade, towhom the destinies of the army of thePotomac Avere now entrusted, was bomin Spain, in 1815, his parents residing,at the time of his birth, in Barcelona. 4
