Summary[edit]

Français : Machines a ecrire, musee d'Art et d'Histoire de Neuchatel
English: World model 2 index typewriter, musee d'Art et d'Histoire de Neuchatel. Originally made by the World Typewriter Co., Maine, USA, beginning 1886, then sold to the Pope Manufacturing Co., Boston. This was an index typewriter: to operate you turned the dial to a letter, then pressed the keys above the platen on the left to type it. This pressed a hammer onto an inked rubber sheet with raised letters attached to the index, stamping the letter onto the paper. The model 2 shown here, first manufactured in 1890, differed from the model 1 in that it could type lower as well as upper case letters. For more information see World 2, The Virtual Typewriter Museum. |
