English: GULF OF ADEN (Dec. 13, 2007) The Merchant vessel Golden Nori comes along side the U.S. Navy dock landing ship USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41) for refueling following its release from Somalia-based pirates Dec. 12, 2007. Pirates seized the Panamanian-flagged vessel Oct. 28, 2007 and held the 23-man crew hostage in Somali territorial waters. The release marks the first time in more than a year that no ships are held by Somali pirates. Whidbey Island is deployed to the U.S. Navy 5th Fleet area of operations in support of Maritime Security Operations. U.S. Navy photo by Cmdr. Michael Junge (Released)
ENS McCoy was selected, by CDR Junge to be the Officer of the Deck for this dangerous evolution which usually entails two professional trained Naval Vessels. She completed this evolution in its entirety, lasting more than six hours. She was also one of junior officers on the ship, but as a formerly enlisted person she had a solid naval back ground and was well respected by both her peer and subordinates. |
