The optical scalar magnetometer developed for the Macao Science Satellite 1

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Macau Science 1 is a scientific exploration satellite in a near-equatorial orbit to study the geomagnetic field, and specifically the South Atlantic Anomaly, from space. It was launched in May 2023.

The scientific payload consists of a high-energy particle detector, a star tracker, a fluxgate magnetometer, and a scalar magnetometer.

The scalar instrument (CDSM) is an optical magnetometer with low absolute error. The required accuracy of the overall magnet field measurement can only be achieved when the fluxgate vector sensors are calibrated with the CDSM as baseline instrument.

The Coupled Dark State Magnetometer (CDSM) sensor and sensor-related electronics are contributed by Space Research Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Graz in cooperation with the Institute of Experimental Physics of the Graz University of Technology.
