DescriptionMA 9 west at Hammond Pond Parkway.jpg | Route 9 west at Hammond Pond Parkway in Newton, Massachusetts. The 1A refers to a year or so in the 1930s when 1A went north to the intersection of VFW Parkway and Centre Street, as VFW Parkway had been completed north of Bridge Street/Spring Street (109), but not south to Dedham. (1A used Ames Street and Bridge Street from Dedham.) Thus 1 came off the Boston-Providence Turnpike at Dedham onto Washington Street, then switched to Centre Street at West Roxbury Parkway (which becomes Hammond Pond Parkway). When the interchange was built on 9, 1 and 1A were in that configuration, and so Hammond Pond Parkway/West Roxbury Parkway directly intersected 1A and 1. When the sign was later replaced, they just used the same text. | |||
