Summary[edit]

Description
English: Anti-government cartoon in Ghimpele, the Romanian liberal magazine. Published in the wake of republican riots at various locations in Romania, it shows the conservative leaders Lascăr Catargiu and Manolache Epureanu (portrayed here as a hare, in reference to his name - [i]epure being Romanian for "rabbit"), masterminding the search for weapons reportedly stored at Jilava Fort, just south of Bucharest. The drawing was published with the mocking title Teribilul complotŭ dela Jilava (Fabula epurească) - "The Terrible Conspiracy of Jilava (A Rabbit's Fable)". The caption has Catargiu urging on his diggers: Cataţĭ bine acĭ trebue să fie bombele şi carabinele, uitele păziţivĕ bine să căutăm bine şi corespondinţa cu Mazini şi Rosetĭ. Avenitŭ era ca săĭ curăţim!!!! ("Make a proper search, it must be here that they keep their bombs and their rifles; now there they are, keep safe, let's also look for the correspondence with Maz[z]ini and Roset[t]i. It was just about time we cleansed them out!!!!"). This references Italy's republican ideologue, Giuseppe Mazzini, who was an idol to the Romanian liberal and republican movement; and C. A. Rosetti, Bucharest's own republican agitator.
